How to Make Felt Easter Eggs with Pockets

Not all scissors are the same when it comes to cutting felt. Be sure to use one of these types of scissors to cut felt.

Supplies

  • Free Felt Easter Egg Templates
  • Felt for Egg (same color or complimentary colors)
  • Scrap felt and/or ribbon for embellishments
  • Hot glue gun, craft glue or hand needle and thread
  • Pinking shears (optional, but these sewing scissors give a decorative edge)

Directions

Step 1

Download, print out and cut out the free templates. You will need to print two templates for each egg. For one of the templates, cut the egg in half with a curve going downwards to make the front pocket.

Two pieces of red paper with white templates on a black grid; the left shows a whole egg shape labeled "3 ½ x 5 inch Egg," while the right shows a partial egg shape—perfect for crafting seed packet covers.

Trace the pattern on the corresponding pieces of felt and cut out.

*The templates come in three different sizes!

Helpful Tip: Cutting inside the traced line, rather than on the line or outside the line, prevents the line from being seen on the finished product.

Step 2

Layer the pieces on top of each other to create the egg. Then pin the felt pieces together.

Step 3

Sew around the outer edge with a ¼ inch seam allowance. Only sew the two pieces of felt together, do not sew along the single piece of felt on the top.

Step 4

Cut out small embellishments from scrap pieces of felt. For example, you can cut out a heart or flowers.

A hand points to a yellow and orange felt flower sewn onto a pink felt slipper, with a partially visible seed packet card inserted inside.

Or tie a piece of ribbon into a bow.

Attach the embellishments to the front of the felt eggs.

Helpful Tips

Here are the helpful tips I learned from sewing these felt eggs:

  • The quality of the felt is important. I used a less expensive felt for some eggs and it was easy to see through the layers. The thicker the felt, the more sturdy the gift holder will be and the less you will be able to see through the fabric.
  • Trim the edges of the felt to match up evenly.
  • Pinking shears can be used for decorative detail on the edges.
  • This easy sewing project is very similar to my felt seed packet holders sewing project, so check those out, too!
