Stop paying a lot of money for throw pillows! You can easily make your own pillows using two placemats and some stuffing. Here’s the quick and easy way to make placemat pillows in just a few minutes!

Our easy zippered pillow cover and this easy envelope pillow cover are also great DIY pillows, too, but they do require an existing pillow form. With this tutorial, you just need stuffing for the inside!

I found these placemats at Hobby Lobby. They have placemats in their kitchen section as well as in seasonal. You can also find placemats at Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Marshalls, TJ Maxx….. the list goes on and on!

Supplies

  • 2 placemats (any size or shape, but they should match in size, even if you are using two different prints)
  • Sewing machine and thread OR hand sewing needle and thread
  • Poly-fil or other type of stuffing (see my Youtube video on how to find inexpensive pillow filling)
  • Sewing clips or pins (optional)

Instructions

Put the placemats wrong sides together, with right sides (pretty sides) facing out. Pin if needed.

Sew along the edges using a sewing machine or hand sewing with needle and thread. Leave a 5 inch (12 cm) gap at the bottom.

I used thread the same color as the placemat and the stitches just disappeared.
  • If using a sewing machine, be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of stitching.
  • If hand sewing, knot the thread and start at the beginning, then leave a long enough thread at the beginning of the opening so you can finish off the seam later. There is no need to cut and knot the thread yet.

For a circular pillow with ruffles, I sewed right along the ruffled edge in the fabric part.

Add Poly-fil through the opening, stuffing until it is as firm or soft as you like.

Hint: Using a wooden spoon can help you easily push the stuffing into the furthest corners!

Close the gap by hand sewing or using a sewing machine to close the opening.
