We used a Dollar Tree splatter screen to make this quick and easy Halloween wreath!

An orange jack-o'-lantern decoration with black facial features and a large black-and-orange checkered bow on top, hanging on a white wall, adds festive charm—perfect as a playful Halloween wreath alternative.

One line of simple sewing is all you need to make this Jack O’Lantern wreath that is perfect for the front door or your kitchen.

A metal pizza pan and spatula on the left, transformed into an orange pumpkin Halloween wreath decoration with a bow on the right, with "From This To This!" text in the center.

The thin, low profile wreath is great for front doors that have a storm door on the exterior, which often makes finding a wreath challenging because there is not enough room for traditional wreaths.

This is just one of our easy Halloween sewing projects. You may also like our cute Jack O’Lantern felt plushie tutorial, too!

DIY Halloween Wreath

Splatter screens can be found in the kitchen section of the Dollar Tree and other home stores.

A metal splatter screen with a black handle and product label, designed to cover pans and prevent oil splashes while cooking—an essential tool, whether you’re frying dinner or creating treats for your Halloween wreath party.

Supplies

  • Splatter Screen (I got mine at Dollar Tree)
  • Orange Fabric (at least 14 X 14 inch square)
  • Yarn or ribbon (2-3 feet)
  • Safety Pin or Bodkin
  • Black Felt
  • Wired Ribbon (I got mine at Dollar Tree)
  • Sewing Clips or Straight Pins
  • Glue or Double-sided Tape

Directions

Step 1

Lay the splatter screen on the fabric. Make marks 2 1/4 inches from the edge of the screen all the way around.

Connect the dots using a pen, Sharpie or tailor’s chalk. Then cut out the fabric circle.

Press the fabric with a hot iron to remove wrinkles.

Step 2

Fold over the edge by 1 inch. Clip to secure.

Step 3

Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew around the circle, leaving an open gap at least 1-2 inches wide. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching.

Step 4

Attach a safety pin to the end of your ribbon or yarn. (If using yarn, it can be easier to tie the yarn on the safety pin, rather than putting the pin through the yarn.)

A safety pin attaches a red yarn to an orange fabric with unfinished edges and visible seams.

Insert the safety pin into the gap. Push and pull the safety pin through, just as you would while making a drawstring bag. You may need to push down the gathers as you go.

Continue to pull the yarn through the casing until the safety pin comes out the other side. Be sure that the end of the yarn doesn’t disappear into the casing as you are pushing and pulling!

Step 5

Flatten the fabric circle by smoothing out the gathers as much as you can.

Lay the splatter screen on top of the fabric circle. If there is a flat side to the handle, be sure that is facing up (will be the back of the wreath after you are done).

Pull on both ends of the yarn to gather the fabric around the screen. Once tight around the screen, tie a bow in the yarn around the screen handle to secure.

Step 6

Cut out eyes, nose and mouth from black felt.

Glue or tape the felt to the fabric.

Step 7

Tie the ribbon into bows and attach to the handle near the fabric.

I tied three normal bows with my wired ribbon, then attached those three bows to the handle using another piece of ribbon. Trim the ends and fluff out the bows as needed.

Hang the wreath with the hole on the splatter screen handle, or tie a ribbon loop through the hole to use as a hanger.
